Wednesday, June
23 - Sunday, June 27, 2010 Our 2010 "End of School" trip to of the north-eastern corner of the Olympic Penninsula
was a roaring success! Twelve Scouts joined the tour, replacing their electronic distractions with fresh air, driftwood,
swimming and encounters with a variety of wild and exotic animals.
We left Seattle the day after school let out
and spent much of the day at Fort Flagler exploring the beach and gun emplacements, getting a bit wetter than anticipated
in the process (who knew that a driftwood bridge might tip over?).
From there we headed to our base camp at the
Sequim KOA and an evening in the pool. The remaining days of the trip followed a general schedule: Get up, eat some breakfast,
make lunch, head out for a day trip at around 11, come back in the mid-afternoon, spend more time in the pool, eat dinner,
head back to the pool or game room, make S'Mores, go to bed. Repeat as necessary. More specifically, Thursday
we headed up to Hurricane Ridge for day two. While we'd initially intended to split into two groups - one heading off down
Klahane Ridge, the other taking the shorter trail up Hurricane Hill - this plan was thwarted by the large volume of late-season
snow on the ridge. So we all hoofed it up the Hill (which still involved some snow, but not on the steep parts of the trail)
where we ate lunch surrounded by deer, chipmunks, and a very disinterested mountain goat.
Friday was spent at
Dungenes Spit building driftwood forts and stacking rocks and (for a few of the adults) walking the beach for a few hours.
Saturday featured a trip to the Olympic Game Farm where higlights included seeing two juvenile Bald Eagles harrass
a seagull and most of the Scouts having their hands covered in the drool of Tibetan Yaks, Elk, Bison and Deer.
Saturday evening we were treated to a barbecue by the grandparents of soon-to-be Eagle Scout Kramer. Kramer ran the grill,
the Scouts played volleyball, horseshoes and croquet, and the adults enjoyed some conversation that didn't revolve around
trip logistics. Sunday we returned relatively unscathed. With the exception of a split lip due to an Extreme
Mini-Golf mishap, a few cases of mild sunburn and general lack of sleep the Scouts came home as healthy as they left!

Friday, May 14 to Sunday, May
16, 2010 The Aurora District's 2010 Camporee was held at Camp Piggott and Troop 123's participation was
a definite success. Eighteen Scouts attended this event and all experienced a weekend they will remember for quite
some time. All three Patrols participated in the skills competition and were able to test their abilities at such
things as lashing, camp prep, first aid, and signaling. All three Patrols did an excellent job and were able to
earn additional ribbons for the Troop 123 flag with the "A-Team" patrol earning a honorable mention ribbon for the
scout spirit and teamwork they showed throughout the events. Everyone who wanted to also got a chance to go to the archery
range and the shooting range. This is where the majority of the Troop spent their time Saturday afternoon after lunch
and they all had a blast shooting and terminating the various targets. This was also a great event for our Scouts to
be able to meet numerous other Scouts throughout the area and see how other Troops function. Everyone was able to experience
a fun and unique event and the anticipation for next year is for even more bells and ribbions to be added to the Troop 123
flag.

Saturday, April 17 - Sunday
April 18, 2010 - We had a great camp out at Tolt-MacDonald park! The trip provided a good shake-down
for our newest Scouts while giving our older guys a chance to work on their leadership and Scoutcraft skills. After a short
hike in (1/2 to 3/4 of a mile) the Scouts made camp, rigged up a tarp shelter for their picnic table, and worked on some of
the Scouting skills they'll need at next month's Camporee. The weather provided the real excitement for the weekend. During the day we had drizzle and rain off and on, but
as it got closer to dinner we could hear thunder approaching. We made an executive decision to move the dinner prep from our
camp site to a covered picnic area in the group camp site (about 200 yards away), and shortly after we had set up and started
cooking the sky opened up as a thunder storm cell moved over. The rain was very heavy, the lightning was near, the thunder
was loud, and everyone had a great time. The weather calmed down after dinner and the Scouts were able to enjoy a campfire
and a game of German Spotlight before turning in to their occasionally damp tents.
Sunday dawned clear but foggy and we were able
to have a relaxed morning before heading home to fully dry out.

Friday, January 15,
2010 This year, Troop 123 had two Winter Camp programs - the "regular" Winter Camp, and
a pilot "Winter Camping Seminar" for older Scouts.
"Regular"
Winter Camp at Camp Sheppard. This program began Friday evening. Scouts spent Friday and Saturday nights sleeping in cabins
at Camp Sheppard, and left Camp Sheppard on Sunday.
Winter Camping Seminar. Those Scouts going on the Winter Camping Seminar, Spent Friday
night at Scoutmaster Mark Steelquist's home to do the final planning and preparation for two nights of tent camping in
the winter wilderness - Saturday night and Sunday night. Monday was a school holiday, because it was Martin Luther
King day.
They then rode to Camp Sheppard on Saturday morning to head out on the trail. As
part of the Seminar, the Scouts and their Leaders prepared for all of their own needs, including snow travel equipment,
winter camping equipment, clothing, and meals. They also fed the Camp Sheppard seminar instructor. They hiked up the spur road off Forest Service road 7300, to Sun Top. This was a six mile hike
that started at about the 2,400 feet elevation, and climbed to about 5,300 feet. They then hiked up three
miles up on Saturday, camped overnight, and hiked three more miles on Sunday, to camp Sunday night at the summit.
They then descended six miles back on Monday morning, and returnrd to Seattle.
