Troop 123 now has access to more than six
.22 caliber bolt action rifles of varying stock and barrel sizes - small, bigger, regular, and large;
Jeff Westmoreland is a NRA certified range master and Rifle Shooting
Merit Badge counselor; and
Tom, the evening Range Master at
Sam’s Gun Shop & Range is a Scouter, he likes our Troop, and has given us a standing offer to use Sam's six lane gun range for free.
So, here is a suggestion:
1. Some
Scout needs to take the initiative, contact the Senior Patrol Leader, and tell the SPL that he would like to
organize a group of at least six Scouts dedicated to getting their Rifle Shooting Merit Badge.
2. If the SPL gives the “go
ahead”, then the Scout needs to contact other Scouts in the Troop to get at least five other Scouts who will commit
themselves to getting their Rifle Shooting Merit Badge within the next couple of months.
3. That Scout then needs to contact
the SPL, Jeff Westmoreland, and Marlin Vortman to let them know that a Rifle Shooting Merit Badge group has been
formed, and to keep them up to date, because Jeff might want to hold some classes before any actual shooting event.
4. The Rifle Shooting Merit Badge Scouts
would then need to complete the academic parts of their Rifle Shooting Merit Badge Worksheets, and submit their Rifle Shooting Merit Badge Worksheets to Jeff Westmoreland for his evaluation.
5. After six Scouts have successfully completed the academic parts of their Rifle Shooting Merit Badge Worksheets, they would then need to arrange with Jeff Westmoreland and Marlin Vortman for an
evening at Sam’s to fulfill the shooting requirements for their Rifle Shooting Merit Badge.
You will notice on the “Troop Calendar” at
www.troop123seattle.com, there are several entries that read: "Possible Rifle Shooting Merit Badge night at Sam's Gun Shop & Range in
Everett. Click here for details."
These
entries are to remind everyone of potential evenings when the six Scouts who are working on their Rifle Shooting Merit Badge
could qualify at Sam’s.
